Omnia for Operators: Introduction to Scout App

Module Introduction

Hi there, and welcome to this course section, which will introduce you to the Omnia Scout App.

The Scout App is a companion to the main Omnia Hub, not a direct alternative.

Instead, it takes the parts of Omnia that are most useful in field, and puts them at your fingertips in a handy App.

Then, as you add information, this is pulled through into the main Omnia Hub.

Let’s get familiar with the app!

Introduction to the App

In the first video of this section, taken from our Connected Farming Broadcast, Lewis discusses the role of the app.

Scout App Features

The Omnia Scout App provides a more professional, standardised way of making, recording and sharing crop notes from the field.

With increasing scrutiny of all crop inputs, particularly insecticides, the app also provides a digital record to help demonstrate the rationale behind input decisions and potentially allow more targeted treatment of crops.

Location markers can be tagged to any notes or pictures manually or by using the phone’s GPS, allowing that area to be revisited and monitored over time, and targeted management plans to be developed in Omnia if required.

Likewise, users can analyse data, such as satellite biomass imagery or yield maps, in Omnia and highlight specific areas for further investigation and “ground-truthing”.

Available Offline

As Lewis alluded to in the video, one of the non-negotiables for the development of the Scout App was that it function offline!

We understand that not everyone has good mobile data coverage in rural areas.  With this in mind you cansave holdings offline in the Scout App. When back online the app will then sync any changes back to Omnia and vice versa.

Field Diary [Scout]

Now that we’ve got a feel for the App, and some key features, let’s dive in to some specific modules.

We’ll start with the Field Diary Module.

As you may be aware – the Field Diary is a module that exists within the main Omnia Hub, covering Task Management and Record Keeping. Field Diary within Scout is intended to complement that system.

The role of Field Diary within the Scout App is twofold:

  • First, it allows users to view records whilst in field, for example:
    • Previous crop inspections
    • Records of completed tasks
  • Second, it allows users to create records in field, for example:
    • Observations, crop inspections
    • Completed activity on farm, such as cultivations, baling, or hedge trimming.

The video below will lead you through use of Scout’s Field Diary Module.

Scout App on Farm

In another segment from our Connected Farming Show, we hear from growers on how the Scout App fits into their Farm Businesses.
